The Project
A project brief was prepared by Defence Estates (USF), for the design and construction of a new single-storey building to provide Post Office facilities in accordance with US Department of Defense’s Postal Manual, with the ability to withstand an internal blast. Additional requirements for vehicular parking and docking space for the delivery and collection of mail were also involved.
The structure of the building included a cavity wall with an inner leaf of two skins of concrete blockwork, incorporating bedjoint reinforcement. A reinforced concrete ring beam supports the timber truss roof structure. The windows are a bespoke specification with a Polyvinyl Butyral (PVB) interlayer to prevent shatter.
The parking area required standoff bollards and a 25 metre exclusion zone from other occupied buildings.
