The Project
Cornwall Council needed to construct a new 5m wide access road across two private gardens to provide vehicle access to a land-locked sewage treatment works. We produced preliminary drawings showing the route of the proposed road to allow Cornwall Council to negotiate with the private landowners.
James Lockyer Associates developed the detailed design for the road construction, taking into account the poor ground conditions by specifying a roadbase reinforced with geotextile. A new mass blockwork retaining wall was designed to support the side of the road, and details were provided to strengthen an existing retaining wall.
In conjunction with South West Water, the sewage treatment works was to be upgraded with the installation of a new package treatment plant. A temporary crane base suitable for a 50 tonne crane was designed but during construction it was found that the crane base location coincided with an area of clay soil with a high level of ground water, and additional work was required to divert the water away from the crane base.
