The Project
When Callington Museum was extensively damaged by an electrical fire, James Lockyer Associates were asked to oversee the reinstatement of the former chapel. As well as the usual considerations involved in works to historic properties, the building’s use also raised other issues, such as the need to ensure that fabric, finishes and services installed during the renovation were suitable for the storage of potentially delicate exhibits. The fire struck shortly before the start of the tourist season, and every week the museum remained closed meant the loss of valuable income.
Working with the museum staff, and local contractors with knowledge of historic restorations, James Lockyer Associates prepared and oversaw a sensitive scheme of renovation works including a new roof structure to restore this historic building.
