We have particular interest and expertise in the professional appraisal of buildings and structures, as well as in assessments and studies related to environmental issues.
We also specialise in refurbishment projects, whether to upgrade buildings to meet modern standards, to enable new and more profitable uses, or to restore and conserve features of historic buildings using traditional materials and crafts.
For reinstatement following damage by fire, flood or earth movement, you can depend on us to move rapidly into action to develop and implement effective solutions, just as we have done on many previous occasions including the disastrous flooding at Boscastle and following a landslide threatening a row of cottages at Porthleven.
You will be in good company. We have developed lasting and mutually-beneficial relationships with clients including The National Trust, Duchy of Cornwall, the Ministry of Defence their agents and prime contractors, and Regional and Local Authorities.

When two bridges over the River Teign were damaged by severe flooding, we were requested to complete the planning and design of the replacement structures and to arrange and project manage the works. Challenges overcome included the planning and environmental issues and concerns associated with working in a flood plain and an area of great beauty during and in the aftermath of the foot and mouth outbreak, a medieval stone wall near one of the bridges which limited access to small plant only, and producing an affordable solution for the client. We engineered a cable-stayed solution, restricting the size and weight of the component parts so that they could be carried to the site and the bridge erected sequentially.
Originally landscaped by Sir Humphry Repton, the grounds surrounding the main house included a large pond behind an embankment dam.During a flash flood the dam overtopped, which caused scour damage to the face of embankment. We arranged reinstatement of the dam, including the provision of an engineered overflow channel to address the risk of future flooding.
Lydford has long attracted visitors through its deep natural gorge, and paths and walkways make access easier and safer for visitors. When one of the walkways was found to be in poor condition, we planned, designed and arranged the construction of a replacement walkway, carefully detailed to follow the same route and all with due regard to the very difficult working conditions. We have also arranged replacement of the walkway into the Devils’s Cauldron, and are engaged in a rolling programme to improve the safety of the guarding to the paths along the gorge.
When a new and improved entrance to this facility was required, we completed the planning, multi-disciplinary design and project management of the works through to completion. We have a large portfolio of completed projects on this base. Other works have included remodelling of a group of barrack blocks, renovation and development of “The Atlantic Club”, a new Post Office and a Gymnasium as well as improvements to the base infrastructure including roads, pavings and new car parking.
A small but interesting project which involved reconstruction of an arch at the end of an avenue of trees in this picturesque landscape. The arch was constructed in stone masonry, for which we devised a reinforced masonry solution to ensure stability.
We have also worked on other projects on this estate and have engineered a solution to reinstate and restore a stone faced embankment causeway.
